In ITEC 7305, I learned the role of a Data Coach is to lead a process of collaborative inquiry with school-based (data) teams and to influence the culture of schools to be one in which data are used continuously and effectively to improve teaching and learning. The process of collaborative inquiry is collecting data, identifying student learning problems, verify the root causes, implement research-based instructional strategies, and monitor the results. I have to change how I teach to change how students learn and how other teachers see the importance of changing and monitoring student learning.
The most valuable field experience for me was the Data Overview. I was completely lost when I started collecting data for this assignment. I am currently a kindergarten teacher and do not get to see the data from the Georgia Milestone Assessments. I gained valuable knowledge and resources about my school and their progress throughout the years. I have only been at Westside Elementary School for two years and was not familiar with their data until this field experience. I also gain the knowledge of a valuable resource from Dr. Jones about a website used to collect data (schooldiggers.com).
I plan to share the wonderful resources gained from this course and textbooks with my principal. I hope we can start to use the norms and protocols in our meetings especially our Data Dig meeting. I anticipate the challenge of implementing the data action plan, because it is hard to change the minds of others when they fell their way is working well.
