5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs.
Reflection
The Individual Teacher Needs Assessment was complete to determine the area of strengths and weaknesses of the teacher to develop a technology-based professional learning program. The needs assessments were developed by a group of elementary teachers in Google Forms.
Standard 5.1, Needs Assessment establishes expectation for conducting a needs assessment to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses and the ability to use the needs assessment to inform the content and delivery of the technology-based professional learning program. This artifact demonstrates my ability to conduct a needs assessment to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a teacher to use technology in the classroom. The artifact also demonstrates my ability to use the needs assessment to inform the content and delivery of the technology-based professional learning program. The needs assessment results informed me of the teacher’s ability to use technology and the lack of experience the teacher had with using technology in the classroom to promote student learning. After a one-on-one interview with the teacher, we determine the best technology-based professional learning program should be based on the district-wide implementation of Illuminate, a web-based assessment and learning system. The teacher expressed a desire to create formative assessments and use the assessments to drive classroom instruction. The teacher hopes to use the program daily.
Completing the needs assessment was a great experience for me. I loved working with the teacher and determining what area would be best for providing professional learning. One thing I would do differently is create questions that were more specific and not so broad.
This artifact impacts faculty development by assessing the needs of the faculty and determining how to meet those needs. The impact can be assessed by evaluating the effectiveness of the professional learning program and the implementation process.
