2.4 Higher Order Thinking Skills
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to support and enhance higher order thinking skills (e.g., analyze, evaluate, and create); processes (e.g., problem-solving, decision-making); and mental habits of mind (e.g., critical thinking, creative thinking, metacognition, self-regulation, and reflection).
Reflection
The Multimedia Design Project was completed to develop a learning experience requiring students to use higher order thinking skills. This Multimedia Design Project is a webquest that can use throughout the school district by 4th grade teachers to provide students with a project-based learning activity that can increase student engagement. I designed the project, but other teacher helped with the implementation.
Standard 2.4, Higher-Order Thinking Skills establishes the expectations for modeling and facilitating the use of digital tools and resources to support higher order thinking skills, processes, and mental habits of mind. This artifact demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support and promote higher order thinking skills, processes, and mental habits of mind through the design of a WebQuest. Students will conduct a short research project that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of the Oregon Trail. Students will write routinely over extended time period in an electronic journal or paper journal. At the completion of the project, students will be able to explain what life was like for the pioneers traveling west on the Oregon Trail. Students have to use higher order thinking skills to create a journal. Students have to solve problems and make decisions (processes) about what resources and supplies are needed to survive the trip across the Oregon Trail. Students also have to reflected on their decisions and use critical thinking skills (mental habits of mind) to complete all learning task.
Completing this project allow me the opportunity to explore resources to help support higher order thinking skills. The project was very helpful for the fourth grade teacher, I enjoyed designing this webquest for others to use. One thing I would do differently is design a webquest to be used by my kindergarten students. This way I would have more involvement in the implementation of the project.
The artifact impacts student learning by promoting higher-order thinking skills, student achievement and increasing student engagement. The impact can be assessed by observing the level of student engagement and through formative and summative assessments at district and state levels.
