5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning.
Reflection
The GAPSS Review/Current Reality was complete to review and evaluate the professional learning process at our school. I interviewed the assistant principal and reviewed the School Improvement Plan (SIP) to collect information about what professional learning opportunities were available and how the implementation was evaluated.
Standard 5.3, Program Evaluation establishes expectations for designing and implementing a program evaluation to determine if the professional learning deepens teacher content knowledge, improves teacher pedagogical skills, or increases student learning. The artifact demonstrates my ability to design and implement a program evaluation to determine if the professional learning at Westside Elementary School deepens teacher content knowledge, improves teacher pedagogical skills, or increases student learning. Professional learning is determined after data analysis of the state assessments and needs assessments are completed by students, parents, and staff. Professional Learning Standard 1 states, “Aligns professional learning with needs identified through analysis of a variety of data” (Georgia Department of Education, 2015). After reviewing the SIP, I scored Westside at level 4. I continued using the information from the SIP and the interviewed to score our school according to the state standards for professional learning. Professional learning at Westside does deepen teacher content knowledge to improve teacher pedagogical skills and increase student learning.
Completing the GAPSS Review/Current Reality enlightening my knowledge about how professional learning is determined at Westside Elementary School. One thing I would do differently is interview the principal and academic coach as well, instead of just interviewing the assistant principal.
This artifact impacts school improvement and student learning by deepening the content knowledge of teachers and improving their pedagogical skills to help increase student learning. The impact can be assessed by formal and informal evaluations of teachers implementing the skills from professional learning training. The impact of student learning can be assessed by increase in student achievement on district and state assessments.
